Valérie Briand

Valérie Briand, MD, PhD, is a medical epidemiologist whose main expertise is on maternal and child health, with a focus on malaria in pregnant women and children in Africa. She has coordinated and participated in several longitudinal studies to document the epidemiology of malaria in pregnancy (MiP) and during infancy, as well as randomized clinical trials for the prevention of MiP.

Since February 2023 she has joined EPICENTRE/MSF as the head of its Department of Research, which conducts epidemiological studies and clinical trials on various tropical and emerging diseases including malaria in low- and middle-income countries.

Research and expertise:

Dr Valérie Briand is involved in several ongoing projects on malaria. As part of the EDCTP-MULTIPLY project, Dr Briand is a research partner in the assessment of the implementation, impact, effectiveness, acceptability/feasibility, and cost-effectiveness of the Intermittent Preventative Treatment of malaria in infants (IPTi) strategy in Sierra Leone, Togo, and Mozambique. Additionally, Dr Briand is contributing to the EDCTP-INTEGRATION project, where she is conducting a cluster randomized trial to evaluate the impact, acceptability/feasibility, and cost-effectiveness of the integrated Antenatal Care and Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (ANC+SMC) strategy aimed at improving IPTp coverage in Mali and Burkina Faso
