Simon Kariuki

Dr. Simon Kariuki is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute/Centre for Global Health Research (KEMRI/CGHR) and the Head of the KEMRI, CDC and LSTM Malaria Program in Kisumu, Kenya. He graduated with a PhD in Immunology from Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya in 2003 and post-doctoral training in molecular biology from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2005. Dr. Kariuki is a fellow of the Africa Academy of Sciences (FAAS).

Research and expertise:

Dr. Kariuki has more than 30 years of research experience focusing on epidemiology of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, clinical trials of existing and potential tools for malaria control, health systems research and laboratory quality management systems. As the head of the Malaria Program, Dr. Kariuki oversees and provides scientific leadership and administrative support to more than 400 staff working in more than 20 projects that encompass diverse areas of public health research including: clinical trials, epidemiology, health systems, entomology, surveillance, monitoring and evaluation and capacity strengthening. He is an author/co-author of more than 170 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised more than 15 graduate students. He sits in several technical working groups of the Kenya Ministry of Health national malaria control program and is a reviewer of several international journals.
