Kamija Phiri
Research and expertise:
Prof. Kamija Phiri is a leading malaria researcher whose work has shaped global health policy, particularly in developing life-saving interventions for vulnerable populations. His pivotal research on Post-discharge Malaria Chemoprevention (PDMC) led to its WHO adoption, significantly reducing child mortality in malaria-endemic regions. With over $56 million in secured grants, he has conducted large-scale epidemiological studies and clinical trials while building research capacity through TRUE, a Malawian research hub supporting 150+ field staff and early-career scientists. His work spans malaria prevention, drug efficacy, and health systems strengthening, directly informing national and international guidelines.
An influential science advisor, Prof. Phiri serves on WHO technical groups, Malawi’s National Malaria Advisory Board, and funding panels for Wellcome Trust and UKRI. His research blends implementation science with policy engagement, ensuring evidence translates into real-world impact. Honored with awards like the EDCTP Scientific Leader Prize (2023), he remains at the forefront of developing scalable solutions for infectious diseases and health inequities in sub-Saharan Africa.
