Richard Idro

Research and expertise:

Dr Richard Idro, MBChB, MMED, PhD, FRCPCH (UK), is an Associate Professor of Paediatrics, Child Health and Paediatric Neurology at Makerere University, honorary Consultant Paediatrician/Paediatric Neurologist at Mulago hospital and Deputy Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences. Both his basic medical and paediatrics training were at Makerere before undertaking a sandwich PhD in Clinical Neuroscience at University of Amsterdam and Paediatric Neurology training with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Dr Idro’s research focuses on better understanding, treating and protecting children from the long-term effects malaria and other parasitic infections, and from brain injury resulting from the infections, sickle cell anaemia and the epilepsies. He is also exploring innovations to prevent and provide early recognition of the brain injuries to allow for prompt intervention. These studies have resulted in over 150 publications and book chapters and multiple awards, including the 2015 African Research Leadership Award by DFID/MRC, the Inaugural Greenwood Africa Award 2019 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
